A decade ago I searched the web to find some notes of Malayalam film song backgrounds that I Could play on
my flute and found nothing .I had learned the basics of carnatic music on the Flute for some years and could
play reasonably well and yearned to play the same
notes I heard on a Malayalam film song .My attempts to reproduce these tunes however, became unsuccessful
and I realized that there were some inherent techniques
and practices that were alien to a carnatic flautist .As I struggled with this problem I searched for a teacher to teach me in Kerala and found that finding a teacher was equally difficult .So I began the painstakingly slow and arduous process of attempting to play like a Professional film song light flautist and it took me ten long years ! .
Ten years later I again searched the web and again I found nothing !.
By then I had become computer savvy and a germ of a thought grew in my mind.Why not create a data base for Malayalam film music backgrounds to help aspiring instrumental artists to access notations ? It would spare them a lot of time and effort of being through the process of learning on their own . And being through the process myself I know what a boon such a website would be to these aspiring artists .Well, that is how I got started ----05/10/2007
THE TECHNICALITIES
As I learned the hard way ,trying to launch a website was entirely different from
thinking of launching a website.The first biggest problem was financial of course .
A reasonable web hosting space and domain would cost me Rs 500 per month
( about 12 USD ) and the web designers were out of reach with charges ranging
from Rs 6000 to RS 15000. And the experts warned me of two things .It would
cost me a lot to keep a professional web site running and with the visitors being
restricted to aspiring south Indian instrumentalists they gave their advise ."your
site will have few hits --It will not become a Self sustained site " You will have to attract the lay man " "To to attract the lay an you must upload music . And uploading music means purchasing copyright rights. " And the final verdict :--- Your site will be out buy the end of the year . " . . ...... ...By then I knew that I had to find a cheap affordable web hosting provider and that I would have to learn to design the web site myself . Seemed like a tall order for a poor musician . But I believe that providence is always with the musician and I found a affordable web hoister .
SITE HELP REQUIRED
This site is entirely designed by me and may have its drawbacks hence
Visitors are requested to bear with the inconveniences if any .
Primarily help is sought from other flautists in any Indian language who
can contribute to this data base .
Secondly, help from other Indian instrumentalists in any Indian language is also sought to add notations of their respective instruments .
And finally any music loving individual who can help out with web design and web space
I am again hoping that "Providence ' will find a way out and ensure the longevity of this website.
A MUSIC SITE WITHOUT MUSIC ?
I am sorry to disappoint the lay man who has dropped in to hear some music .
There is no music in this site and there are no downloads as as the objective
of this site is to help amateur Indian instrumentalists who want to professionalise
their music .
We are only providing notation and playing techniques used in playing various instruments in Indian film music .
Who am I ?
Does it really matter ? I am freely sharing what I know with the world and I believe that matters more than knowing who I am . Its irrelevant .
THE WELL WISHERS OF--- odakuzhal.com
odakuzhal.com was launched on 05/10/2007. In the first month of its life it has received 231 visitors out of which 42 visitors have spent more than 1/2 an hour on the site . 35 visitors have spent more than an hour on it . It has received 17 guest book entries and 15 e.mails relating to flute related queries .These statistics are far beyond the expectations of the Administrator of this site and it proves that the critics were wrong . It has also started the process of creating a data base of stage artists , music teachers and music related shops in India .
A few philanthropic NRI's have stepped in to help the site .They have donated web space and web design software and have helped the administrator of this site technically .It has acquired a Go Daddy hosting account and web design software which has helped the site have a better look .
